Colour/ “Chroma”

Colour/ “Chroma” workshop for WP Summer School went great – the Yr9 students produced some really wonderful colour posters. Yr 10s will be doing the workshop at the Aimhigher Summer School this week – looking forward to it!

An arts-science blog Colour/ “Chroma”will soon be going live. The blog will offer readers thoughts on colour and will present some of the contributing material which is to be woven into a collaborative lecture-event between Dr Frank Mair (Chemistry) and PhD researcher Jenna Carine Ashton (Art History & Visual Studies). The event will take place at the Whitworth Art Gallery (date tbc).

AHVS Widening Participation 2010/2011

An update on the Widening Participation front 2010/2011! …. Busy busy again this academic year: developing on-line resources for teachers to support the post-16 EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) – currently being tweaked by the University web team before they go ‘live’ – I’ve created resources on the topic of ‘Engaging with Visual Culture’ ….

A great Yr9 History Day last month – students attended a workshop entitled ‘Visual Culture: Evidence of History’. The workshop explored the role of visual culture within history, examining how art and imagery aides our understanding, and provides ‘evidence’, of societies and cultures, people and events.

Exploring our responses to colour with Yr7s at an Aimhigher event next week, and a series of Yr10 Identity Days at the Museum coming up at the end of March/ April.

Summer School & History Day

Busy busy busy … we are all preparing workshops for the Widening Participation Summer School (15th, 16th, 17th June) and the History Day (23rd June). The AHVS workshop for the Summer School explores ‘Artists, Artefacts and Museums’; the History Day workshop examines ‘Architectural Histories: The Building as a Book’ … very much looking forward to delivering these, especially as students may be using plasticine in the History Day workshop (!) …. an idea for undergraduate seminars perhaps? ……

Darwin CPD Event

I was thrilled to contribute to the two Darwin CPD events for teachers, 20th and 24th April held at the Manchester Museum, with Lou Sutherland, Cat Lumb, Alexa Jeanes, Henry McGhie and Pete Brown. Teachers were given a tour of the fabulous Charles Darwin exhibition, and throughout the session were introduced to various creative techniques and methods for engaging with museums and collections, and the topic of evolution, such as mind mapping, Clippy Island, and my focus, ‘scrapbooking’ the Museum. I discussed the work of artist Mark Dion, in particular the Surrealism Bureau which is installed in the Museum, and artist-scientist Ernst Haeckel and photographer Karl Blossfeldt. We then examined the Collection Wallets (see earlier post), and the process of collecting and ‘scrapbooking’ ideas, information and images to create an interdisciplinary teaching resource. The CPD event was great for demonstrating the links between art and science, and emphasising the Museum as wonderful environment for cross-curricula learning.

Artist Chrissie Morgan worked closely with the curators to visualise Darwin’s life story, and the resulting displays are stunning. Any students (or lecturers) that have not yet visited the Darwin exhibition, I very much recommend you do so before it is packed away in August – this is not an exhibition just for scientists!
