Paul Dobraszczyk’s third year undergraduate students were treated last wednesday to a tour of some of Manchester’s abandoned and secret underground spaces. The tour took in the infamous Cold War “Guardian” nuclear shelter before moving onto WWII air raid shelters underneath Deansgate. We entered the tunnels through a secret staircase hidden in the Great Northern Warehouse which took us into a system of filled-in canal and ended somewhere underneath Coronation Street (in Granada studios). Our guide filled our heads with gruesome details – from blitz stories to details of mass burials and headless ghosts. It was great fun and very VERY dark.

More photos after the jump.
